Meeting UICians in Hong Kong

Maybe I am forgetful but I cannot recall someone from UIC coming to Hong Kong to tour. Until recently.

Over the weekend I met Merly Engbino, a fellow Computer Engineering grad 2 years my junior who recently got assigned in Dongguan, China for her work. It is interesting to gather news from her. I have not got anyone to ask about UIC life or UIC humor here. When I was in Singapore I had lots of fun and laughter with batchmates Ana May, Rendell, Jose and Butch recalling things in the past. How time flies, we are approaching 8 years since graduation.

Web Woes

When I lost my job early this year, I committed to develop a website for a client of the company employing Edwin, the boyfriend of my Chinese friend Janice. It was what I wanted to do in the process of getting a full time job and visa sponsorship. Things were doing fine as I discussed with my primary contact, Williamson.

At the beginning of the project I was given timetable but not sufficient resources to develop the program; I had to do it given my time, skill and chosen platform. As I was also busy teaching in the morning, I had less time for the program. I had to do the latter since the school promised sponsorship. Then on I started to work crazy hours just to keep up the schedule. Never did I know that the client terminated its agreement with the company in product dealership. The client is a popular battery maker based in Kwai Chung. The legal battle would start even if I would never be aware of it until about five months later. In the meantime I got employed by PCL which eventually restricted me from working on projects outside the office.

Williamson then called up and asked for the edited web content as proof that the company did some work on the battery loyalty program. It was to be stopped indefinitely upon the severance of its business relationship with the client.

Now, I do not know what my participation in the litigation will be. I hope it will be minimal so as not to disrupt my work at PCL where I also have my hands full of work.

Sayonara

My flatmate Jun is now in Japan. After working in Hong Kong for more than 4 years, it is about time to move on. With my 14 months of stay in his flat coming to an end, all I can say is thank you for the accomodation and friendship, not to mention terms like jo san, gift to myself,ha ha (of The Simpsons's character Nelson) and learning three different dishes. I have to move on my own too, as I am in the process of moving to my sixth house in 3 and a half years of stay in Hong Kong.

16-hour Shifts

I have been working like a machine the past days, reminiscent of the Amazing Race days last September/October. I am assigned a task for reporting module for Tourism Australia E-marketing Platform system. My brain must be rusty from long period of abstinence in programming while focusing on Email Marketing and Search Engine Optimization. I am crossing my fingers I could meet the (2nd) deadline (original was a week ago).

Almost Goodbye (Sentimental Mode)

It is sad to see friends go especially if they have become part of you. It has always been a feeling of mine during my entire stay in Hong Kong. It used to be Onin, Leo, Jay and Raymond then there was Martin, Elna, Benjie, Tintin, Girlie and Narnie.

Soon Sel followed, then Shasha, Melissa and very soon, my flatmate Jun will have to go. That is life. I have to move on with my current set of friends. Somehow I am happy I am not with them and not bade them goodbye when I lost my jobs.

Thank God for my friends...
